How To Value & Trade For 2027 Rookie Picks In Dynasty Fantasy Football

Sam Wallace breaks down how to approach the 2027 rookie draft picks in dynasty fantasy football leagues as we sit about a year away from one of the most decorated rookie classes in recent fantasy football memory.

Every few years, an incoming rookie class starts to generate so much hype that dynasty fantasy football managers trip over themselves trying to acquire future first- (and second-) round picks. Even teams that are still relatively competitive are torn down in an effort to rebuild around all the shiny new prospects.

Welcome to the 2027 NFL Draft Class.

Evaluating The 2027 Rookie Class For Dynasty Fantasy Football

This class has had the eye of managers everywhere for well over a year already. In case you are curious about some of these players, let me list some of the offensive skill position players currently ranked inside the top 32, courtesy of NFL Mock Draft Database.

  • No. 1 - Arch Manning (QB)
  • No. 2 - Dante Moore (QB)
  • No. 3 - Jeremiah Smith (WR)
  • No. 7 - Cam Coleman (WR)
  • No. 10 - Drew Mestemaker (QB)
  • No. 11 - CJ Carr (QB)
  • No. 12 - Julian Sayin (QB)
  • No. 14 - David Mensah (QB)
  • No. 17 - Jamario Johnson (TE)
  • No. 19 - Kewan Lacy (RB)

You get the idea. That's a ton of QBs that could enter the league next season. Of course, a lot can happen between mid-June and next spring, but now you're starting to see why this class has had so many managers hyped for the last year plus.

So, how should you play it if you missed the initial wave? Let's explore a couple of options.

Preparing For 2027 Rookie Picks In Dynasty Fantasy Football

Option 1 - Pay The Premium

I'm going to start by saying that, candidly, this is my least favorite option. I have no problem trading for future draft picks if there are guys you want to take a shot on next spring, but you've missed the window to acquire them at a reasonable price.

Dynasty leagues have a very specific calendar cycle that happens like clockwork each year. Leading up to the NFL Draft, rookie picks are at their most valuable. Managers are excited about the incoming players and all the "what if" storylines we tell ourselves. Veteran players don't have as much value as teams start looking to the future in an effort to rebuild and get younger.

Then, as the NFL and fantasy seasons kick off, future rookie picks start to lose a bit of their luster. As teams navigate injuries and bye weeks, their sights turn towards the fantasy playoffs and potential championships. Competing teams will often look to shore up their roster with proven, win-now assets in exchange for draft capital. The cycle then bends back towards rookie picks after the Super Bowl.

However, the 2027 class is a bit unique. The word is already out on these prospects, and the corresponding draft capital is quite pricey. For example, courtesy of KTC, an early first-round pick in 2027 is worth about the same as Justin Herbert, CeeDee Lamb and Drake London in Superflex formats. I would have a hard time trading away Herbert for a chance at an easy future 1st round pick. Even so, if Herbert is the only viable piece you have left on a worn-out roster, you might be enticed to make that deal.

Option 2 - Zig While They Zag

The list of 10 prospects I listed earlier is likely to change in the months ahead. While all eyes are going to be on guys like Manning, Moore, and Smith, other highly-touted players will have down years or deal with injuries. At the same time, others will have breakout campaigns and launch themselves into the Round 1 discussion. If you want to take advantage of the impending chaos, buck the trend and sell your 2027 picks.

The only time I'd do this is if your roster is already looking pretty solid or close to it. As long as you have a two-ish year championship window left, I don't mind going this route. Here's how I'd approach it.

Knowing how valuable the 2027 rookie picks are, you could feasibly flip them into guys like the aforementioned Lamb or London. While Lamb is 27 years old, London is still only 24 and he just signed a four-year, $141-million extension with the Falcons. We have both Lamb and London projected to finish as top-seven wideouts in PPR scoring this upcoming season. In some cases, I'd rather have the certainty of a proven commodity versus the "what if" of an incoming rookie.

Remember the Family Guy meme? If you know, you know.

Selling 2027 rookie picks will likely put you in the minority of your league, and that's okay. In fact, I think now is the best time to do it if you're going to go that route. As mentioned, once the college season kicks off, a lot of things can impact projected player rankings and values. Make your moves ahead of the chaos and lock in proven veterans who are in their prime.

Also, you don't have to just go after top-end studs like Lamb or London. If you have later first-round picks or even second-round picks, you can target more veteran wideouts who, again, are a more sure thing compared to their rookie counterparts. For more insight as to which veterans I would recommend targeting, check out this recent column.

There's a ton of hype surrounding the 2027 class, and it's easy to see why. We could get some legitimate game-breakers at more than one position. Keep in mind, however, that nothing is ever a sure thing. Don't be afraid to go against the grain and look for value elsewhere.
